A Weekend in Livermore, California: Wine, Food, and Coastal Charm

Ever dreamed of sipping wine under sunny skies, wandering through vineyards, and catching ocean breezes—all in one weekend? Same. I’ve wanted to experience California wine country for a long time, and in September, my super awesome husband made that dream come true. 🥹

Let me just say… it was everything I hoped for and more. Between the amazing weather, relaxing vibes, incredible food, and beautiful wineries, this California weekend getaway was one for the books. If you’re thinking about heading to wine country but don’t want to deal with Napa Valley crowds or prices, let me introduce you to Livermore, California—the hidden gem of the wine world.

Below are all the details from our trip: where to eat, what to do, which wineries to visit, and a few travel tips I wish I’d known. Bookmark this for your next weekend escape!

Why Livermore Instead of Napa?

When you think of United States wine country, Napa Valley is probably the first place that comes to mind. But if you chat with locals—or seasoned wine travelers—they’ll tell you Livermore is the more relaxed, affordable, and equally charming alternative.

Located just an hour east of San Francisco, Livermore Valley Wine Country is one of California’s oldest wine regions, yet it still feels like a best-kept secret. We loved that the area wasn’t too crowded, the wines were delicious, and everything just felt easier. Plus, wine flights were only $10 at most wineries. Um, yes please.

What to Pack for a September Weekend in Wine Country

  • Cardigan or light jacket: Days are sunny (around 75°F), but evenings get cool.
  • Comfortable shoes: For vineyard walks, winery tours, and beach strolls.
  • Crossbody bag or small backpack: Hands-free wine tasting = winning.
  • Refillable water bottle (like this travel-friendly one): Stay hydrated while wine tasting. Plus it shrinks for easy travel!
  • Outfit tip: California casual works everywhere. I wore cute flats, flowy tops, and light denim. You can’t go wrong with a sun dress!

Where to Eat in Livermore, CA

🌮 Pacific Catch

If you’re a seafood fan (or even if you’re not), do not miss Pacific Catch. We split the calamari and fish tacos, and I’m still dreaming about those tacos. The flavors were fresh, bold, and totally satisfying. I also had a margarita served with a bamboo straw—because California takes their eco-consciousness seriously (plastic straws are banned here). Big fan of that, honestly.

🍷 Garré Vineyard & Winery (Restaurant)

We had dinner here after a full day of winery hopping and it was *chef’s kiss*. I ordered the halibut—a light, flavorful dish that hit the spot after all that wine. My husband went for the ribs, and let’s just say… if you’re from Texas, they’re different. Not bad at all, just… not Texas BBQ.

Travel Tip: Make a reservation ahead of time (especially on weekends). It can fill up fast! Reserve here.

Best Livermore Wineries to Visit

🍇 Charles R Vineyards

This was hands-down my favorite winery of the trip. The tasting flight was only $10 and included SEVEN wines! My favorites were the Miner’s Rosé and Bonnie’s Deux Rouges, but every glass had its own charm. The wines ranged from semi-sweet to dry, with fruity notes that felt just right for sipping in the sun. The vibe was super chill, and the staff was warm and welcoming.

🌹 Murrieta’s Well Estate Vineyard

Murrieta’s Well wins the award for most beautiful winery. As you walk in, you’re greeted by a garden full of massive blooming roses. The building itself dates back to the 1800s and has this rustic charm with a stunning chandelier in the tasting room. We enjoyed a delicious charcuterie board while sampling wine on the patio, surrounded by vineyard views.

Pro tip: If you’re a wine club member, head upstairs for an exclusive view and experience. I’m not a member, but… I was tempted.

Other Fun Things to Do Around Livermore

🏚️ Winchester Mystery House

History buffs and haunted house fans—this one’s for you. We took a drive out to San Jose to explore the Winchester Mystery House, a famously bizarre mansion built by Sarah Winchester starting in 1884. She believed she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles (which her husband created), and to keep them at bay, she continuously built onto her house until her death in 1922.

Expect doors that open into walls, staircases that lead nowhere, and a ghost story or two. It’s a wild, wonderful, and weird way to spend an afternoon.

🏖️ Davenport Beach

I don’t know about you, but if I’m anywhere near the coast, I have to visit the beach. So we took a scenic drive (about an hour) out to Davenport, a tiny town with fewer than 500 people and a super peaceful beach. The water was freezing—seriously, bring a jacket—but the views were stunning and the air is SO fresh!

We laughed, ran from icy waves, and just soaked up the salty air. There’s something really grounding about being by the ocean with people you love.

Travel Tips for Visiting Livermore Wine Country

  • Visit in September: Harvest season = the best time to visit. The vineyards are lush, the weather is perfect, and the grapes are ripe.
  • Book tastings ahead of time: Some wineries require reservations, especially on weekends.
  • Stay nearby: There are charming inns and boutique hotels in the area worth exploring. Some wineries also have rooms!
  • Bring snacks and water: Especially if you’re hitting multiple wineries in a day.
  • Use a designated driver or wine tour shuttle: Safety first. 🍷

Final Thoughts

Cali was fun, beautiful, and so relaxing. Whether you’re a foodie, wine lover, or just looking for a chill weekend getaway, Livermore, California is a must-visit.
