Designing Your Dream Life Part 6: Building a Career (or Biz) You Love
(Designing Your Dream Life Series)
Work That Feeds Your Soul, Not Just Your Wallet
Let’s be honest — we spend a lot of our lives working. Whether it’s a 9–5, freelance gigs, or your own business, your career plays a huge role in your dream life. And yet, so many of us wake up every day feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or like we’re just going through the motions.
But here’s the thing — work doesn’t have to drain you.
It can actually be one of the most empowering, exciting parts of your life… when it aligns with your values and goals.
This post is about finding (or creating) a career that lights you up — one that supports your dream lifestyle, gives you purpose, and feels like an extension of who you are.
Step 1: Redefine Success (Your Way)
Before you start tweaking your résumé or opening an Etsy shop, take a deep breath and ask yourself:
✨ What does success look like to me?
Because real success isn’t always the corner office or six-figure paycheck.
It might be:
- Working remotely so you can travel more.
- Having flexible hours so you can spend afternoons with your kids.
- Doing something creative that challenges you.
- Or simply feeling less stressed at the end of the day.
You get to define your own version of success. And once you do, you’ll stop chasing what everyone else is chasing — and start creating a life that actually fits you.
Step 2: Audit Your Current Situation
Here’s a quick exercise (grab your journal!):
Write down what you like and don’t like about your current work situation.
Ask yourself:
- What energizes me during my workday?
- What drains me completely?
- If money wasn’t a factor, what would I do instead?
You might discover that you love organizing chaos (hello, project management!) or that you feel alive when creating something from scratch (maybe that’s your cue to start that side business).
The goal isn’t to overhaul your life overnight — it’s to understand where you are now so you can make intentional moves forward.
Step 3: Align Work With Your Values
You’ll always feel friction when your career doesn’t align with your core values.
If you value freedom but work in a micromanaged environment, you’ll feel trapped.
If you value creativity but spend your days crunching numbers, burnout isn’t far behind.
So, what are your top three work values?
Freedom? Growth? Security? Community? Flexibility? Impact?
Once you know what matters most, you can filter every job, project, or opportunity through that lens.
Step 4: Start the Side Hustle or Passion Project
Sometimes, the dream career starts as a small side project.
It doesn’t have to make money right away — it just has to light a spark.
Maybe it’s:
- Launching your first vending machine (wink, wink).
- Starting a travel blog, online shop, or YouTube channel.
- Offering organization or event-planning consulting on weekends.
- Freelancing in something you already love doing for friends or family.
Side hustles give you freedom to experiment and build something you control. And who knows — it might just become your full-time dream gig.
Step 5: Invest in Yourself
You are your best investment. Always.
If you want to grow in your career (or launch a business), start by building your skillset.
Take that online course. Read the book. Sign up for that workshop. Hire a mentor.
Even if you don’t see instant results, you’re expanding your potential.
And when opportunity knocks, you’ll be ready to open the door with confidence.
Step 6: Design Your Ideal Workday
This one’s a game-changer.
If your dream life includes more freedom or flexibility, start living like it — even in small ways.
Ask yourself:
- What would my ideal workday look like?
- What time would I wake up?
- What would I do first?
- How would I schedule breaks or self-care?
Then, try to incorporate just one element of that dream workday into your current routine.
Even something as small as doing your creative work in the morning instead of after lunch can shift your energy and productivity.
Step 7: Network With Intention
Your network is one of your greatest assets.
Surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and make you think bigger.
Attend local business meetups, join online communities, or connect with others in your field on social media.
Sometimes the right conversation can open a door you didn’t even know existed.
And don’t forget — networking isn’t just about getting. It’s about giving. Offer help, share insights, and cheer others on. That’s how real relationships (and opportunities) grow.
Step 8: Don’t Fear the Pivot
Your dream career might change — and that’s okay.
What fulfills you at 25 might not at 35 or 45.
Give yourself permission to evolve.
It’s okay to start over, try something new, or shift directions completely. Every chapter brings lessons, skills, and connections that build your foundation for what’s next.
You’re not starting from scratch — you’re starting from experience.
Step 9: Stay Grounded Through the Grind
Even the most passionate work can get messy. There will be deadlines, stress, setbacks, and self-doubt.
That’s why grounding routines are so important.
- Start your day with intention — journal, meditate, or stretch.
- Take screen breaks to reset your energy.
- Celebrate progress, not perfection.
Remember, dream careers are built, not found. And the building process can be just as rewarding as the end result.
Step 10: Celebrate the Wins
Too often, we hit a milestone and immediately move on to the next goal.
Pause. Reflect. Celebrate.
Whether it’s landing a client, asking for that raise, or simply feeling excited to open your laptop on Monday morning — that’s worth acknowledging.
Your dream life is built in moments just like that.
Final Thoughts
Your career isn’t just a paycheck. It’s a platform for your purpose, creativity, and growth.
When you start aligning your work with your passions and values, you’ll notice everything else in your dream life falls into place — your finances, your energy, your confidence, your sense of fulfillment.
