Designing Your Dream Life Part 2: Goal Setting That Actually Works

You’ve dreamed it. You’ve visualized it. You’ve made Pinterest boards, journaled your future mornings, and maybe even picked your dream houseplants (Fiddle leaf figs, anyone?). So… now what?

Welcome to the part where dreams start getting real.

In this post, we’re talking goals — but not the guilt-ridden, unrealistic, one-week-and-you’re-over-it kind. This is goal setting that actually works, because it’s aligned with your life, your values, and your pace.

So grab your planner, your favorite coffee mug, and maybe a fresh page in that pretty notebook — we’re getting to work.

Why Most Goals Fail

Here’s a little truth bomb: it’s not you, it’s your goal system.

Most people fail at reaching their goals because:

  • They’re too vague (“get in shape,” “make more money”)
  • They’re based on pressure, not passion
  • They’re not broken down into actual steps
  • They’re not tied to real values or timelines

The fix? Use a proven system. Make it yours. And stop trying to overhaul your whole life in one week. (Seriously. Please.)

The SMART Goal System (With a Real-Life Twist)

You’ve probably heard of SMART goals before. I think we’re all a bit sick of hearing about them even, however, there’s a reason – they work. BUT! if you’ve been living under a rock, here’s the breakdown:

  • S – Specific: What exactly do you want to do?
  • M – Measurable: How will you track progress?
  • A – Achievable: Is it realistic with your current resources/time?
  • R – Relevant: Does this goal align with your dream life?
  • T – Time-bound: When will you complete it?

But let’s take it further with a Haven & Horizon spin.

Here’s an example of a “meh” goal:

“I want to be healthier.”

Here’s that goal SMART-ified:

“I will work out for 30 minutes, 3x per week, at home, for the next 30 days to build strength and energy.”

That’s trackable, realistic, and tied to a bigger purpose — which means you’re actually more likely to follow through.

And here’s the Haven & Horizon spin:

“I will work out for 30 minutes, 3x per week, at home, for the next 30 days because I am strong and have energy.”

This adds a component of actualization and self fulfilling prophecy! You’ve established you ARE strong and have energy which compounds on you being more likely to follow through and adds you being more likely to be successful. Think placebo effect, but with goals.

The 3-Tier Goal Framework

One of my favorite systems is thinking in tiers. Why? Because it gives you flexibility, structure, and wins at every level.

  1. Big Vision Goal – your 1-year or dream life outcome
    • Example: Build a $5,000/month side hustle
  2. Quarterly Focus Goal – 90-day action zone
    • Example: Launch my first product and grow email list to 300 subscribers
  3. Weekly Mini Goals – small, digestible steps
    • Example: Write 2 emails, post 3 Pinterest pins, record one Reel

See how this flows? It makes your big dreams feel less overwhelming and way more doable.

Let’s Break It Down — Together

Let’s walk through how to build your own SMART, 3-tier goal system:

1. Choose ONE area of focus

From the dream life categories:
🧠 Personal growth
💰 Finances
❤️ Relationships
💪 Health
👩‍💻 Career/Business

Pick what feels most pressing right now.

2. Create your Big Vision

This is your 1-year “what would blow my mind” dream.
✏️ Write it like this:

“By [date], I want to [achieve specific result] so I can [value/feeling/outcome].”

Example:

“By July 2026, I want to pay off $10k in debt so I can have more financial peace and travel freedom.”

3. Break it into 90-Day Chunks

Ask: What would move the needle most in the next 3 months?

Create a quarterly focus goal and tie a number to it.

“Pay off $2,500 by cutting expenses and adding $800/month from my vending machine side hustle.”

4. Build Your Weekly Plan

Now zoom in.
Ask: What can I do this week to move this forward?

Keep it simple:

  • Make a budget in YNAB
  • Research 2 new vending machine sites
  • Pack 3 lunches instead of eating out
  • Pitch a freelance gig
  • Open a high-yield savings account

The Power of Habit Stacking

Here’s a fun twist: Pair your goals with habits you already have.

Example:

  • While making coffee → journal 3 things you’re working toward
  • After brushing your teeth → read one page of your finance book
  • During Sunday laundry → plan your top 3 goals for the week

This makes progress feel automatic — and kind of cozy.

Tools & Systems I Swear By

Want to track your goals in a way that doesn’t feel like a second job? Try these:

  • Notion: Great for organizing quarterly goals & routines
  • Trello: Visual project boards for biz or big goals
  • Google Calendar: Schedule time blocks to work on goals
  • A Goal Journal: Or even a pretty notebook!
  • Habit Trackers: Use a printable or app (like Streaks or Habitica)

Bonus: Reward Yourself!

Please — please — don’t wait until the final result to celebrate. Build in small rewards:

  • Finished your monthly goal? Treat yourself to a solo date.
  • Made progress on your side hustle? Take the afternoon off.
  • Hit your savings milestone? Splurge on the fancy coffee.

This keeps your brain invested. Goals should feel good — not like punishment.

When You Get Off Track

Spoiler: You will miss a day. Or a week. Or a whole season.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Drop the guilt — it literally changes nothing.
  2. Ask why — was the goal unrealistic, misaligned, or just not a priority right now?
  3. Reframe — can you scale it down or shift the timeline?
  4. Start small again — momentum comes from action, not perfection.

Real-Life Goal Examples (Inspired by You!)

💰 Financial

Big: Save $5,000 this year
90-Day: Cut $500/month from expenses + start vending machine biz
Weekly: Stock machines, cancel unused subscriptions, track spending

❤️ Relationship

Big: Feel more connected in my marriage
90-Day: Weekly date nights + monthly check-ins
Weekly: Schedule dates, use couples app, plan one surprise

💪 Health

Big: Feel strong and energized daily
90-Day: Build consistent 3x/week workout habit
Weekly: Follow YouTube workouts, prep meals on Sunday, walk daily

Final Thoughts: Make It Yours

At the end of the day, this isn’t about crushing goals like a machine. It’s about creating structure that supports your vision and your energy.

Set goals because they bring you closer to a life that feels like home — not because you “should.” When it’s yours, it works.
